September '18 Update: Mega Trip Midterm Report

This update finds me half-way through my 6-week trip, training in Africa, the Philippines and Cambodia.

Malawi

During the first leg of the journey, I spent two weeks at CAPA (Central African Preaching Academy) teaching New Testament Survey (on Luke and Acts) to the 2nd year M.Div. students. Much fruitful discussion took place regarding the many important themes surrounding the gospel and the church from these important books. Additionally, I also taught a few sessions on preaching which included preaching labs where the students preached from an epistle.

Please continue to pray for these men, many of whom are in full time ministry while they are taking a full M.Div. curriculum over the course of three years. Pray for their stamina, for their ministries, and for their families in this difficult challenge.
One very encouraging experience from this trip was to see former students who are now teachers in the program. One is teaching introductory Greek while the other is teaching introductory Hebrew. While it is a stretch for them both, but such a blessing to see Malawians already involved in the instruction of their countrymen. Pray for them as they study and teach these challenging subjects.

Philippines

At the time of writing this update I am currently in Cebu, completing the sixth and final module on Expository Preaching. At the end of the week we will hold our first graduation for those who have gone through the three-year program. I hope to have pictures of this for my next update.Another important milestone will then take place on Monday as we begin a second batch in Cebu. This will be the first location where we will have a second group go through preaching program. Currently, we are expecting over 35 men to come which is almost twice as many than any other class to date.Following completion of Module 1 next week, I then travel with Tina to Davao to teach Module 6 to our second graduating class. Here is a video of a pastor from Davao expressing how he has been helped from the training program.

Prayer Requests

  • Please pray for the Lord to sustain my health and energy. So far, I have only had one day free during this trip and don’t expect another one until late next week.

  • Pray for the men who will be starting the program in Cebu that they would stick with the program and grow in their preaching

  • Please also be in prayer for Tina as she travels on her own to meet up with me in Cebu next week. She will be leaving on October 3rd and then remain with me until we return from Cambodia on the 23rd.

  • Please continue to pray for the remaining support that we need to cover insurance and GMI training expenses.
